Lesson 3:
Requirements for the Environment of the Nursery
Concrete screed with insulation. Finishing layer - topping (such as the floor in the hypermarkets Metro, Epicenter) or ceramic tile. Important: the floor must have drains for water. Also, it should not be slippery, so that employees are not injured in the process.
Walls and Ceiling
The following options are possible:
  • Sandwich panels (with metal profile).
  • Galvanized metal profile with foam inside (density 25).
  • PVC lining, with polyfoam inside (density 25).
Tables (Racks) for the Breeding Stock, Part 1
They should be made of wood. It is important that they are comfortable to work with: the table should be high enough to reach the level of the worker's waist (belly), this will provide free access to the screens (see the detailed info about them below) when washing them from snail droppings. Of great importance is the correct equipment of racks. They should rise above the floor to a height of 70-80 cm, as well as be equipped with screens on which snails will be attached during mating. The height of these screens should be 40-50 cm, the material of the screens is white food-grade film. It is important that the screens should not touch the bottom of the table. The distance between the bottom of the screen and the table should be up to 4 cm. This is done so that the feces of snails do not linger on the film from below, and they are easier to remove from the table.
Tables (Racks) for the Breeding Stock, Part 2
A protective barrier should be made around the perimeter of the table to prevent snails from spreading. It can be either a salt barrier or an electric shepherd. If the choice falls on the first option, the tableted salt should be laid out in the prepared cable channels around the perimeter of the table. Snails are afraid of salt and will not be able to climb over the barrier.

The electric shepherd is another reliable method of preventing snails from spreading off the shelves. It requires a power supply of 12 volts, 3 or 5 amps, 2-3 rounds of perforated tape or galvanized iron tape. One circle closes on the plus, the other on the minus, the distance between them is 0.5 cm.

Air Humidity
- from 19:00 to morning - 90-100% (during this time the snail is active, eats and reproduces);
- from morning to 19:00 - 75-85% (during this time the snail sleeps).
The desired level of humidity can be achieved with a mist irrigation system, or by installing a humidifier and dehumidifier in the nursery.
Air Temperature (Heating)
- from 19:00 till morning - 17-19 ° C;
- from morning till 19:00 - 20-22 ° C.
You can heat the room in three ways:
- underfloor heating (pipe diameter 20 mm for industrial premises, 16 mm for other buildings 15 cm apart);
- industrial wall electric panels (which do not dry air) - THERMOPLAZA of 1,7 kW;
- Volkan industrial ceiling fan heater (for fast heating and air circulation).
It is desirable to have white light and even lighting throughout the room. The walls should be white. This will increase the activity of snails during mating and egg laying.
Used for washing racks and additional humidification. The optimum water temperature should be 20-22 ° C. It is necessary to install a boiler for water heating and a mixer with an electric controller in the nursery. This will control the temperature of the water supplied.
The approximate consumption of water, which will be during the breeding season of the snail, is 0.5 cubic meters / 1 ton of the breeding stock per day.
Be sure to test the water to see if it is suitable for use on a snail farm. This condition is very important because the snail reacts very poorly to some water parameters, especially to heavy metals. Therefore, if the water readings are out of the norm, it will be necessary to install a filtration system to soften the water.
Required water parameters
1. pH 6.5-8.5;
2. hardness up to 10 mmol/dm3;
3. ammonia up to 5 mg N/dm3;
4. iron 0.5 mg Fe/dm3;
5. nitrates up to 10 mg N/dm3;
6. manganese MU up to 0.1 m/dm3;
7. fluorides up to 0.3 mg F/dm3;
8. nitrites can be found;
9. heavy metals cannot be allowed.
Sewer system
The sewer gutter should have an artificial slope into the settling pit. There may be several such pits in one room. There should be special pumps with faecal knives in each pit. These pits should be connected by a sewer pipe 150-200 mm. There should also be a common sewer pit so that the tractor can pump out the faeces.
It is necessary to provide a constant supply and exhaust ventilation system in the nursery. It must complete a 3-fold ventilation cycle in one hour. We also use a recuperator at the same time.

The recuperator should run for about 15-20 minutes per hour.

It should be understood that in order to increase the reproduction efficiency of the breeder, it is necessary to automate all processes and parameters in the nursery as much as possible.

To do this, it is desirable to install the following sensors in the nursery:
- humidity level sensor;
- heating sensor;
- ventilation sensor;
- lighting sensor.
Automation of processes will protect against errors caused by the human factor, as well as facilitate the work of the staff and the supervising of the management.
